Pedestrian Safety At and Near Bus Stops, NJTPA

Final-Pedestrian-Safety-At-Near-Bus-Stops-Susan-G-Blickstein

This project focuses on metropolitan New Jersey and involves both research and applied improvement concepts to better understand both environmental and behavioral factors that increase pedestrian collision risk around bus stops and to develop a public outreach campaign focused on this important safety issue. As part of the Nelson Nygaard team, SGB prepared a literature review on factors influencing pedestrian risk at bus stops and on best practices governing public awareness campaigns addressing risky behavior. Dr. Blickstein facilitated focus groups to inform the development of an educational campaign to reduce risky behaviors that contribute to pedestrian crashes. In addition, SGB led the stakeholder outreach efforts, including development of a survey for NJTPA RTAC members, interviews with key stakeholders, and interviews with NJ Transit bus operators.
